The Tananbaum Family Leadership Program for Work and Development
The Tananbaum Family Leadership Program for Work and Development is a unique, merit-based fellowship opportunity designed to provide internship support, mentoring and enriching educational opportunities for Vassar juniors who demonstrate a commitment to professional and personal growth, achievement and success. Fellows are selected in the fall of their junior year, and receive internship search guidance, personalized career coaching, and mentoring over the course of the spring, the duration of their summer internship opportunity, and through senior year. Fellows participate in enriching workshops on topics like internship search skills, interview preparation, professional conduct, and networking.
Awards range from $5000 (domestic) to $6000 (abroad), depending on the internship location. As this is a merit-based fellowship, financial need is not a consideration in the selection process. However, fellows who receive financial aid and secure a low or unpaid internship may receive additional summer earnings relief.
Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of four primary criteria:
– Establishment of a clear connection between their immediate career goals and future professional goals
– Demonstration of a record of constructive endeavors, both on campus and during previous summers and other extended breaks
– Evidence of motivation, resourcefulness, maturity and the ability to take initiative
– Demonstrated academic commitment and accomplishment
The application consists of a series of essay questions, a resume, a transcript, and one letter of recommendation.
Note: This is a highly competitive fellowship; only 20 juniors are selected each year. In 2015, 135 students applied and there was a 14% acceptance rate. Applicants not selected may be referred to other Vassar fellowship and funding sources.
Applications are due Wednesday, October 15, 2017 by 12 midnight. No applications will be accepted after this date. Letters of recommendation are due by October 20th.
