Resources for Students with Disabilities

The CDO is committed to partnering with students and alumni with disabilities in all stages of the career development process. We encourage members of the Vassar community who have questions pertaining to career development and disability to make an appointment with our career counselors. The CDO also has numerous online resources intended to help people with disabilities find jobs and internships, secure accommodation in the workplace, and understand their rights under the ADA and related legislation: 

Career Opportunities for Students with Disabilities (COSD)

“COSD is a unique and dynamic national professional association comprised of more than 600 colleges and universities and over 500 major national employers.  COSD's mission is to improve the employment rate of college students and recent graduates with disabilities on a national basis.  COSD works with higher education institutions and assists them in developing collaborative relationships between the Disability Services and Career Services offices on campuses.” 

COSD offers CareerGateway, an employment database geared specifically towards job-seekers with disabilities, as well as FullAccess, a networking and education tool for professionals from a wide array of industries. To gain access to these resources, sign up for free on the COSD homepage.

American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD)

The AAPD is America’s largest disability rights organization. The AAPD works to influence legislation as is pertains to the intersection of disability with education, the workplace and employment, health, and housing, among other areas. The AAPD also runs a summer internship program that finds competitive internships in Washington DC for students and graduates with disabilities. In addition, the AAPD publishes the annual Disability Equality Index, which assesses major employers according to national benchmarks on corporate policies and practices for disability employment inclusion and accessibility.

Connect

COSD and Our Ability joined forces to lanch Connect. Connect helps college students and recent graduates with disabilities connect with employers seeking them. Connect is a highly interactive, intuitive and cool tool for students and employers to learn about each other. Students are able to share stories, videos and more to help showcase their abilities and interests. Employers can use this eciting new tool to find and engage qualified students.

Disability.gov

Disability.gov is the United States federal government’s comprehensive website for information on – and services for – Americans with disabilities. Disability.gov provides a number of resources that job seekers can use to find potential employers, and also contains material and advice for companies that hire and employ persons with disabilities. The site also hosts content about disability rights law as it applies to employers, employees, and job seekers.

JAN – Job Accommodation Network

JAN “is the leading source of free, expert, and confidential guidance on workplace accommodations and disability employment issues. Working toward practical solutions that benefit both employer and employee, JAN helps people with disabilities enhance their employability, and shows employers how to capitalize on the value and talent that people with disabilities add to the workplace.” JAN consultants can be reached by phone and email, and provide free, confidential technical assistance about job accommodations and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
