Thompson-Bartlett Fellowships for Women in Science, Mathematics and Computer Science · Internships & Summer Jobs Internship Funding

The Thompson-Bartlett Fellowships for Women in Science, Mathematics and Computer Science have been created to encourage highly motivated women to pursue summer opportunities that will allow them to build their scientific, mathematic and computer science knowledge and advance their career goals.

Supported through a generous gift from Dede Thompson Bartlett ‘65, women are encouraged to seek internships and research positions in corporate, university, or medical fields in which women have been historically under-represented. This Fellowship has been established to honor Emilie Jones Thompson, Ms. Bartlett’s mother, a champion of higher education who overcame enormous obstacles to graduate at age 45 with honors from New York University.

Summer internships may be in the private sector, university research centers, or in government in work related to science, computer science, and mathematics, broadly defined. Strongest preference will be for internships with an entrepreneurial applied-science aspect, especially those in the private sector. Applicants should have their internships secured at the time of application. Internships should last for approximately 8 to 12 weeks, and may be paid or unpaid.

Eligible to apply:

Sophomore and junior women of US citizenship, as well as permanent residents who have applied for naturalization. This Fellowship is offered to open up opportunities for women and remedy past discrimination faced by US women entering science fields. Strong preference will be given to applicants majoring in Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry or Physics. Preference will be given to applicants majoring in Biochemistry, Biology or Neuroscience. It is strongly recommended that all applicants have taken 1-2 (or more) college courses in mathematics.

Application and selection process:

The application will consist of a letter of recommendation (faculty preferred), resume, transcript, information about the proposed internship, and a series of essay questions related to the applicant’s future career plans and goals.

Applications
will be due Monday, April 14, 2014.

Awarding of funds:

Up to five (5) students will be selected for awards of $4000 each.
Funds will be awarded to recipients in full in May 2014.

Expectations:

The goal of the Thompson-Bartlett Fellows program is to encourage Vassar women to persist in seeking careers in science, mathematics and computer science. Fellows will receive coaching and mentoring through the Career Development Office, and will be expected to be mentors to subsequent Fellows. Fellows will be asked to complete a “learning contract” prior to the start of the internship which will outline their goals and expectations for the summer. At the culmination of the internship, Fellows will write an essay in which they reflect on their summer experience. Fellows will gather in the fall to share the insights of their experiences with the Fellows’ cohort. Finally, Fellows will serve as advocates of the program to future applicants (e.g., serving on panels, hosting information sessions, etc.).
