What you wear to that first interview will depend on a variety of factors, from your gender to the industry you are interviewing for; for example, an interview for an analyst position at an investment bank will require a conservative suit, whereas "business casual" may be more appropriate for an interview for a non-profit organization. It is always safer to err on the side of over-dressing. Virginia Tech's page on Interview Attire is a great resource for more information.
